Your Next Big Goal: A Step-By-Step Guide on How to Achieve It

“What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.” – Henry David Thoreau

Goals are the invisible force that keeps us moving forward. They give us a sense of purpose, challenge us to grow, and remind us that life is still full of possibility—no matter our age. Achieving goals, both big and small, brings a deep sense of fulfillment, reinforcing the idea that we are capable of shaping our own destinies.

As women, we have the opportunity to step into our fullest potential in our later years, embracing new possibilities with wisdom and confidence—making goal-setting more important than ever, to shape this exciting chapter with intention and purpose. This is the time when family and societal expectations start to fade, and the focus starts to shift directly to us. At this point, the question is no longer “What should I do?” but “What do I truly want?”. This is a phase of life when many women step into their most empowered years, rewriting the rules and proving that age is not a limitation—it’s leverage.

History is filled with women who accomplished incredible things later in life:

  • Julia Child published her first cookbook at 50 and became a global icon.
  • Vera Wang designed her first wedding dress at 40; built a fashion empire in her 50s.
  • Dame Judi Dench (she rocks!) won her first Academy Award nomination at 63.

These women prove that it is never too late. The experience and skills built over decades are not barriers but assets—a well of knowledge, resilience, and creativity that can be harnessed for new endeavors. The key is to define success on your own terms – and be laser-focused on what you want.

Sometimes, it is fear of change that holds us back. What if I fail? What if I’m too old to start? These questions are just mental noise – your ego on autopilot, trying to save you from some looming disaster that isn’t even real. The truth is, you should not fear failure. What you should be terrified of, is regret. Playing it safe, is the most dangerous thing you can do.

Taking risks is essential to our evolution because it pushes us beyond our comfort zones, forcing us to grow, adapt, and discover new strengths we never knew we had. Every bold step—whether in career, relationships, or personal development—expands our possibilities, proving that progress and transformation come from embracing the unknown rather than fearing it. Your next big goal isn’t just about achieving something tangible—it’s about proving to yourself that your best years are yet to come – who says you can’t make them extraordinary?

So, how do you set and actually achieve a goal that excites you? Let’s break it down.

Choose a goal that truly matters to you

Many women set goals based on external pressures—what they think they should do instead of what genuinely excites them. A meaningful goal should light you up inside, not feel like another obligation.

Questions that I ask myself when I am deciding on my next big goal:

  • What have I always wanted to do but put off?
  • What excites me and makes me feel alive?
  • What do I want to be remembered for?
  • What would I like to accomplish just for the pure joy of it?
  • What would make me feel most fulfilled in this next chapter of my life?
  • How do I want to grow – mentally, physically, emotionally or spiritually?

Setting meaningful goals opens the door to exciting new possibilities, and unexpected directions. You might choose to learn something new, whether it’s mastering a language, playing an instrument, or developing a new skill that sparks your curiosity. Or, prioritizing health could be your new focus—embracing strength training, yoga, hiking, or exploring better sleep!

Perhaps you’re ready for professional reinvention, whether that means starting a business, writing a book, or pivoting into a side hustle that aligns with your passions. Or maybe your goal is centered on personal growth, such as building confidence, strengthening relationships, or traveling solo to embrace new adventures. Whatever path you choose, the key is to make it meaningful to you—something that excites you and propels you forward into this powerful next chapter of your life.

Use a goal framework – structure your way to success

Using a goal-structuring framework is essential because it transforms vague aspirations into clear, actionable steps. Without structure, goals often remain wishes—easily abandoned at the first sign of resistance. One of the most effective frameworks is SMART – a framework that ensures that goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound, it will provide you with a roadmap that will keep you focused, it will define clear milestones for you, and enable you to track progress effectively.

The SMART goal framework is my go-to, but there are others. Check out the FAST method (Frequent discussions, Ambitious scope, Specific milestones, and Transparent execution) which adds an element of accountability, encouraging regular reflection and adjustment. And there is Well-Formed Outcomes, a concept from NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), that focuses on aligning goals with personal values, engaging the senses in visualizing success, and ensuring that achieving the goal positively impacts other areas of life.

You can even combine these approaches, creating a powerhouse goal-setting structure: define your goal with SMART, maintain motivation and adaptability with FAST, and ensure deep alignment and emotional connection with Well-Formed Outcomes. This layered approach not only helps you set goals but also sustain them—turning dreams into realities with clarity, purpose, and momentum.

Break it down step by step – and keep track of the progress

One of the biggest goal-killers is overwhelm. When a goal feels too big, it can become overwhelming, leading to procrastination or self-doubt. The key to success? Breaking your goal into bite-sized, doable steps – this is my favourite part. I break my goal down into a series of smaller steps on a page in a binder, and put small tick boxes beside each step. Whenever I have time to work on my goal – whether 5 or 50 minutes – I take out my list and voilà — I always have the next step on hand. With the steps listed, and milestones clearly labeled, you are never at a loss as to what to do next. Also, broken down like this, you can even make a commitment to do one thing per day. You would be amazed at how quickly your daily actions add up.

Listing the steps of your goal also makes tracking a breeze. Each completed small step builds confidence and momentum, and brings you closer to achieving the bigger vision. If you don’t like my method, then use an app like Habitica, GoalsOnTrack or Coach.me – try them! You can’t manage what you don’t measure – so track your progress.

Stay accountable – don’t do it alone

Achieving a goal becomes significantly easier when you have a strong support system to keep you motivated and on track. Having accountability—whether through a friend, coach, or community—provides encouragement, shared wisdom, and that extra push when motivation dips. Scheduling weekly check-ins allows you to reflect on wins, identify challenges, and adjust your approach as needed. When you’re supported, your goals feel less overwhelming and more achievable, making the journey not only more effective but also more enjoyable. Accountability isn’t about pressure—it’s about staying committed to your future self.

Embrace the messy middle—overcoming obstacles

Every journey has rough patches, and the key to success isn’t avoiding setbacks—it’s expecting them and learning how to push through. Self-doubt? Keep a success journal to remind yourself of past wins and the progress you’ve already made. Lack of time? Treat your goal like an important appointment—schedule each step into your calendar and commit to it. Fear of failure? Reframe failure as feedback—it’s not the end of the road, it’s just a lesson that helps you refine your approach. When challenges arise, don’t see them as signs to quit—see them as opportunities to adjust, grow, and come back stronger.

Celebrate the wins – no matter how small

Celebrating your wins, no matter how small, is essential to staying motivated and committed to your goals. Each milestone—whether it’s completing a workout, writing a page, or learning a new phrase in a language—reinforces progress and should be celebrated! Acknowledging these victories boosts confidence, keeps you engaged, and reminds you that success is a journey, not just a destination. By celebrating along the way, you turn goal achievement into an uplifting and rewarding experience.

Your future starts now

The best time to start that goal you have always wanted to achieve was yesterday. The second-best time? Right now. Your next big goal doesn’t have to be huge—it just has to be yours. Define success on your own terms. Choose something that really excites you, make a plan. Take small, steady steps, and track your progress. Surround yourself with support, don’t quit, adjust.  Give yourself a high five for each step you complete. And most importantly—believe in your ability to create the life you want.

Take five minutes today to write down one meaningful goal. Then, take one small action toward it. This isn’t just another phase of life—it’s your most powerful chapter yet. Go make it happen.
